Morning Tribune, Altoona, PA, Thurs., March 12, 1891

At ten minutes after 2 o'clock yesterday morning Mrs. Jemima Elway, beloved wife of John S. Elway, died at her home, No. 815 Eighth avenue. A sufferer for many years, death was but a release from pain and the end was peace. Calling her children to her bedside, she spoke to them of the future and asked them to meet her in heaven, where there was no suffering, nor trouble. Having lived the life of a Christian, the summons to meet the Master was not dreaded, for it meant to her the putting away of mortality and the putting on of immortality. The cause of death was a complication of diseases. Two weeks ago she became seriously ill, but rallied from the attack and was able to be about. Friday last she again became ill and from this never rallied. At times her sufferings were intense, yet they were borne without murmuring. Mrs. Elway, whose maiden name was Jemima Greenland, was a daughter of Joshua and Betsy Greenland, and was born at Cassville, Huntingdon county, March 17, 1839, and was therefore aged 51 years, 11 months and 24 days. On November 19, 1867, at Huntingdon, she was united in marriage with John S. Elway, and with her husband began housekeeping in Altoona in 1870. Mr. Elway previously resided here. Her sorrowing husband and three daughters - Misses Dollie, Lizzie and Aggie - are left to mourn the death of an ever devoted wife and mother. Her parents have preceded her to the other shore, but one sister and two brothers are left to sorrow for the departure of an ever kind sister. These relations are Mrs. John W. Black, of Huntingdon, and Major W. W. Greenland and J. Wilson Greenland, of Clarion, Pa. For many years Mrs. Elway was a member of the Presbyterian church. On her coming to this city she became one of the congregation of the Second Presbyterian church, which was then under the care of Rev. Chichester as pastor. During the intervening years she attended the services of the church of her choice whenever her health permitted. The funeral will take place on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The services will be held at the home and will be conducted by Rev. A. W. Spooner, her pastor. The interment will be made in Fairview cemetery.
