Margaret E. (Greene) Barstow, 87, of Middle Street, Hadley, died Tues. Nov. 16, 2010 in the Center for Extended Care in Amherst.
Born in Belchertown, Feb. 9, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Harry W. and Delia L. (Dodge) Greene. She graduated in 1941 from Templeton High School. A lifelong resident of Hadley, she was a member of the First Congregational Church of Hadley for over 67 years. She served in many capacities at the church-trustee, clerk, church supper committee, church secretary, president of the Women's Union, Sunday school teacher-but her greatest love was taking care of the babies in the church nursery on Sunday mornings for over 25 years. She was president of the American Legion Auxillary Unit 211, member of the Cooley Dickinson Hospital Auxillary, Triad Group of Hadley and the Hadley Historical Association, and the Council on Aging secretary for many years. She was part-time curator, with her late husband, Normand, of the Hadley Farm Museum, and a member of the Museum Association. Margaret was a avid cook and loved to bake bread. She published four cookbooks and was working on her fifth. Her husband of 64 years, Norman C. Barstow, predeceased her in 2006.
She leaves her children, Norman C. Barstow Jr. and his wife, Janet, Harry "Hank" Barstow and his wife Tees, and daughter Janet L. Anderson and her lifetime partner, Joseph Vassallo, all of Hadley, and Robin E. Bialecki and her husband Valentine of Easthampton; nine gandchildren, Matthew Barstow and his wife Diane of Hatfield, Susan Martin and her husband John of Agawam, Anne Chapdelaine and her husband David of Chesterfield, Raymond Anderson of Northampton, Roger Barstow and his partner, Melissa Doran, of Williamsburg, Audra Barstow and her parner, Jimmy Goulet, of Hudson, N. H., Valentine Bialecki IV of New Britian, Conn. , Margaret Bialecki of MArlborough, and Molly Bialecki of Easthampton, and six great grandchildren who were her pride and joy. Margaret was predeceased by three sisters and a brother. She was also survived by her half sister, Carol Pierce of Haverill, and nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Friday, Nov. 19, at 10 a.m. in the First Congregational Church in Hadley. Burial will be in the Hockanum Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday, Nov. 18, from 2 to 4 and 5 to 7 p.m. in the Drozdal Funeral Home,Northampton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hadley Farm Museum Association, care of Sharon Parson, 137 Mill Valley Rd, Hadley, Ma. 01035, or to The Norman C.
