GREENFIELD — Marion L. (Greene) Elmer, 85, formerly of Cypress Street, died Wednesday (6-14-06) at Poet's Seat Health Care Center.

Marion was born in Gill on March 21, 1921, the daughter of Leland and Emma (Spencer) Greene. She was a graduate of Turners Falls High School, Class of 1938. She then graduated from the former Northampton Commercial College, completing a two-year course of study in just one year.

On July 6, 1943, she was married to Russell C. Elmer and they celebrated 61 years of marriage together. Russell passed away on July 27, 2003.

Marion enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1943 and attained the rank of sergeant.

Following her enlistment, Marion became an executive secretary. She was the secretary to the superintendent of Greenfield public schools, Al Sommers, for a number of years, also at Stoneleigh-Burnham School, and most recently at Deerfield Academy.

Marion was a member of the First Congregational Church in Greenfield for many years. She served as church secretary as well as many church committees. She also volunteered in the Gift Shop at Franklin Medical Center.

She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, walking, vacationing in Maine and Cape Cod. She was an avid Red Sox fan.

Survivors include two daughters, Lynda Ward of Greenfield and Marcia Pratt of Kennebunk, ME; a brother, Herbert Greene of Greenfield; five grandchildren, Amanda Peters, Melissa Ward, Emily, Geoffrey and Timothy Pratt, and one great-grandchild, Riley Peters.

A funeral service will take place Saturday at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church, 43 Silver St., with the Rev. Judith Kinley presiding. Burial services will follow in Green River Cemetery.

There are no calling hours.

At the request of the family, flowers will be omitted and memorial contributions may be made to either the Resident Activities Fund at Poet's Seat Health Care Center, 359 High St., or Hospice of Franklin County, 329 Conway St., both in Greenfield, MA 01301.
