Elise G. Chance, 95, passed away at her home of 60 years with her family at her side. She was born on April 12, 1914, in Polk County, Fla., the daughter of George and Annie Lee Green. Elise was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Chance, her sister, Bunny Blackman, and her brother, Glenn Green.
Elise graduated from Lakeland High School in 1932. She was later employed by the Florida Citrus Commission and the Federal Housing Administration. She married Lewis Chance of Winter Haven in 1941. In 1945, the two moved to St. Augustine to take ownership of Old City Motors, a local General Motors dealership.
Throughout her life, Elise devoted her considerable talents and energy to her family, church, and community. Elise was always busy; she loved good food and she cooked for everyone. Her pound cake is legendary. Elise also had a green thumb and adored flowers. Her many plants just needed to be near her in order to thrive. She loved her home and was still keeping house as she always did until recent months.
Throughout her life, Elise was a member and leader of many church and civic organizations, including the Altar Guild and St. Catherine's Guild at Trinity Episcopal Church, the King's Daughters, Flagler Hospital Auxiliary, the American Cancer Society, EMMA, and several garden clubs, in addition to serving as a Sunday School teacher and Camp Fire Girl leader. Elise served as president of the Junior Service League and the Women's Exchange, and was always available to lend a hand whenever she was needed. In her late 80s she began volunteering at the St. Augustine Historical Society Library, and she continued to join "the Lunch Bunch" monthly into her 90s.
Elise will be forever missed by her daughters, Marsha Chance and Bonnie McCrea, and their husbands, Greg C. Smith and Keith McCrea, and by her granddaughters, Leslie Rose McCrea and Layla Chance Smith, to whom she has been "the best Grannie ever!" Elise was devoted to her extended family and is survived by her nieces and nephews, Larry Green, Debbie Norris, Tim Blackman, Maureen Altman, and Gary Blackman, and their spouses, as well as 14 grand nieces and nephews, and her cousins, Sherrie Abraham and her son.
The family will greet friends 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Craig Funeral Home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Episcopal Church, followed by a reception in the Parish Center and graveside services at 12:30 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery.
Because Elise loved flowers, they are gratefully accepted. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church or the Women's Exchange.
Craig Funeral Home Crematory Memorial Park is in charge of arrangements.
