Helen Howler, centenarian, of Allegan, passed away Sunday, July 13, 2014 at Ely Manor, Allegan. She was born April 6, 1914 in Janesville, Wisconsin, the daughter of Harry and Johanna (Volbrecht) Green. Having made it to her 100th birthday, Helen could recall many stories of The Great Depression and Prohibition. Considering she lived through these eras, she learned if you wanted anything, you had to work hard for it. Helen's life had been one of hard work. That and sticking to goals, cooking and eating good food and not smoking is what she credited for her long life. The President of the United States acknowledged Helen's 100th birthday, though getting Willard Scott to announce her birthday on the Smucker's jelly commercial was more difficult. Helen outlived her three husbands, but she still has a sister who still walks, rides her bike and goes to the gym.
