ALFRED P. GREENWOOD
Alfred P. (Polly) Greenwood, 63, World War I veteran and former prominent semi-pro baseball and football player in this area, died Saturday at Putnam Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. His death is mourned by many.
He was born in Bennington Jan 15, 1895 and had attended local schools. For some years he was with the old Holden & Leonard plant and his last employment had been at Old Bennington Weavers. During his youth he excelled in baseball, boxing and football. He had played left field with the old team of baseball amateurs back in 1915 when Roy Denley was its manager, playing until he went on duty in World War I. Mr. Greenwood enlisted June 7, 1917 and was discharged April 29, 1919, after having served with Co. I, 1st Vermont Inf., Co. F. 101st Ammunition Train. He was overseas from Oct 3, 1917 to April 23, 1919 and served in all the major battles including the Argonne, St. Mihiel, Marne, etc.
For several years after 1920 he starred on the Bennington town baseball team, with such former local baseball greats as Gordon Scott, Benny Miner ad Frank Brazell.
He had also played center and guard on the Bennington semi-pro football team and at center was said to be tops. He played before and after his war service.
He had always attended the Old Timers Football banquet in North Adams every year.
He had been prominent in the local post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was also affiliated with Bennington Aerie, F.O. Eagles.
His marriage to Georgianna Clark was solemnized at St. Francis de Sales Church by the Rev. W.P. Hackett.
Mr. Greenwood was well known in the community and had made a host of friends in this area over the years.
Survivors are his wife, four stepdaughters, Mrs. Edward (Marion) Armstrong; Mrs. Ralph (Florence) Rogers, Mrs. Karl (Elizabeth) Pacer, all of Bennington; three sisters, Mrs. William (Mary) Arnold, Torrington, Conn.; Mrs. Fred (Laura) Waite, Bennington; Mrs. Daniel (Rose) Kelly, New Britain, Conn.; two brothers, Leon Greenwood, Bennington; William Greenwood, Hoosick Falls and also nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held from Mahar Funeral Home tomorrow at 8:30 am with a prayer and from Sacred Heart Church at 9 where a requiem high Mass will be offered. Entombment will be in Park Lawn vault. Burial will be in the family lot in that cemetery in the spring. Friends may call at the funeral home at their convenience.
