Originally from New Jersey, William E. Green and family moved to Georgia around 1831. He initially lived in the area where Morgan, Oconee and Walton Counties meet. The 1840 census has him living in Morgan County, GA. Mr Green was involved in the cotton manufacturing business all of his life. When he first came to GA, he started the High Shoals Cotton Mills with Ephraim Stiles Hopping. Ephraim was his wife's first cousin by her aunt Martha Stiles Hopping and Daniel Hopping. But by 1846, William E. Green was living in Campbell County (now Douglas County), GA, where he remained for the rest of his life. He was known for his "integrity and high moral character". William died at the age of 71.
