Wiliam Hickle Graves was named after the Tennessee preacher William Hickle. There is a family photograph of the preacher with members of the family. My great-grandfather lost most of the fingers on one hand while a boy. I was always told he did not like to display this hand in photographs but there is a photograph of him with Emma Bell Renfro Neal Graves. He is holding a small child (possibly Dovie) and the hand minus the fingers is showing. He died at age 54 while plowing his field on their rented family farm. The youngest child, Carrie, was a baby in arms when he died.
William Hickle traveled to Texas from Tennessee with his first wife, Sarah Skaggs Graves, and three children. One daughter died either soon after they arrived in Texas or on the way. Charley and Bertha were the surviving children. The journey took them 9 months in a covered wagon. Sarah died about 2 years after they arrived in Texas and is buried in an unmarked grave. Her cemetery is now overgrown and abandoned.
