Matilda was the daughter of Samuel and Sophie Watkins. She was working as a domestic in one of the finer homes in Chicago when she met Alois Gramlich, who was employed as a butcher. The two were married at her home in Petersburg in Menard County, Illinois on July 28, 1853.

In 1855 they left Illinois and headed for the west coast. Matilda's brother, James, went with them. They arrived in Sarpy County the winter of 1855 and in Jan 1856 their 1st child, Samuel, was born. They decided to make Nebraska their home.

Matilda and Alois had eleven children: Samuel, John, Mary, Barbara (Lake), Louis, Susan (Ewell), Eli, George, Fred, Alice (Rice), and Adam.

Matilda died from consumption in 1882 at the age of 49 years.
