Betty Jean Payne Atkins, 73, of Painter Creek Road, Chuckey, the South Central Community, passed away Thursday morning, May 15, 2014, at Johnson City Medical Center.

Betty was born in the South Central Community on August 13, 1940, a daughter of the late Maynard and Delphia Graham. She was a longtime employee of the Moody Dunbar Pepper Plant and had also been employed by Sunrise Health in nursing, Greene Valley Developmental Center, Superior Metals, Murray Cabinets, and Lynn's Restaurant. She was the owner of B & G Ceramics and Draperies.

She was a member of Horse Creek Mission and was an active member of the South Central Ruritan Club. She was a member of the Hampton Market Bowling team.

She enjoyed her grandkids, gardening, flowers, and her dog: Peanut.

Survivors include her husband: Hugh Atkins; five children and their spouses: Allen and Karen Payne, Danny and Joyce Payne all of South Central Community, Kim and Jim Kyker of Jonesborough, Joe Paul and Tabitha Payne of Limestone, Dwight Haskell Payne and Alissia Hensley of the South Central Community; three step-children: Marlene and Robert Thornton of Richmond, VA, Hugh Atkins of Missouri, and Rodger Atkins of Maryland; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; several cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband: Robert Payne.

The family will receive friends from 5 – 8 p.m. on Saturday at Doughty-Stevens Funeral Home.

Funeral services will follow visitation at 8 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Amos Penley and the Rev. Kenneth Bowens will officiate. Brooke McInturff will sing. Family and friends are asked to meet at Doughty-Stevens at 1 p.m. on Sunday to go in procession to Liberty Cemetery for the 2 p.m. committal service.

Active pallbearers will be Aubrey Graham, Walter Painter, Cleve Painter, John Bishop, John Morgan, and Daniel Payne. Honorary pallbearers will be Floyd Graham, Dwayne Graham, and Dr. Charles Montgomery.
