Bertha "Pauline" Alter age 97, of Hale, Mo. passed away Tuesday, March 1, 2011 in Willow Springs, Mo.

She was born August 2, 1913, in Sumner, Mo., the daughter of Jesse T and Bertha Mueller Graham. She was a 1932 graduate of Sumner High School, and a 1936 graduate of North Central Missouri College Nursing Program. On March 5,1936 she was united in marriage to Fred Alter in Chillicothe, Mo. He preceded her in death. She worked as a LPN at the Carroll County Hospital for several years.

She was a member of the the Hale Methodist Church, formally the East Grace Methodist Church. She was a member of the Hale Chapter #135 Order of the Eastern Star and was a three time recipient of the Worthy Matron award. She was a member of the Women's Society of Christian Service and United Methodist Women, where she was president for 3 years. She was a former member of the Leaton Club and Dulaney Club, and she served as a past oresident of both. She also volunteered her time to help the local 4-H Chapter.

Survivors include grandchildren, Jimmy (Shirley) Alter of Willow Springs, Mo; Mike (Pam) Johnson, Hale, Mo; Karen Pogge of Lawrence, Kansas; Ann (Jim) Benson, and Linda (Paul) Sweetgall of Canyon, Texas, several great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Fred Alter in 1979, and her son Graham Alter in 1984, and a sister, Clara Guilford, and a great granddaughter.
