Early Life: Grew up on a in Mayfield, UT where father was farmer/rancher. She learned hard work. At early age music became a lifelong passion, practiced piano for hours a day.
Education: Elementery school in Mayfield; high school in Manti; Snow College; Brigham Young University.
Life's Work/Service/Interests: Joyce was an excellent student and met her future husband at Snow College. Upon the completion of Robert's LDS mission and Joyce's graduation from BYU, the two were married. Four months after marriage, Robert was drafted into the Army. Joyce remained in Provo to teach school. Following Army service, returned to Utah for several years. Joyce again taught school while Robert furthered his education. In 1960, family moved to San Francisco area for ten years. Joyce used her musical talents to teach piano lessons. In 1970, the family returned to Utah to be closer to families. Joyce played in tennis and bowling leagues. A wonderful seamstress, she loved to sew. She also liked creating craft items for her home. She loved traveling with her husband, 21 cruises, her favorite to the Holy Land. She loved her family and created many traditions. Nearly forty years ago, she was diagnosed with cancer. The radiation therapy eliminated the cancer, but left her with challenging health problems. In spite of the problems, she persevered and remained positive and active.
Religion/Associations: Joyce was a faithful LDS Church member, served in stake and ward Relief Society presidencies, Junior Sunday School and as stake and ward organist and pianist. She also volunteered in the community, including Utah Youth Village.
Awards/Accolades: Prom mistress in high school, voted "Personality Plus" in college.
Preceded In Death By: Her parents and brother, Neil.
Survived By: Her husband, Robert; daughters: Teri (David) Ferney; Diane (Paul) Smith; and Carolyn (Robert) Buma; sisters: Thelma Mellor and Glenna (Glade) Peterson; 11 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren.
Special Thanks: Caregivers and medical personnel, U of U Healthcare System.
Memoriam Wish: Utah Youth Village or the Huntsman Cancer Institute.
Funeral/Mortuary: Service June 1, 2013 at 12:00 noon at Olympus Cove Church, 3832 Oakview Drive. Visitation with family at church on Saturday 10:30-11:30 a.m. and Friday 6:00-8:00 at the church.
Interment: Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park
