In North America prior to the early 1800s, a person's age at death in town records and on gravestones was based on a variation of the Latin phrase Ætatis suæ (i.e., Æ, "Aged," in the XX year of the person's Age.) However, there are multiple examples at cemeteries where this pratice was continued by individuals into the early 1900s. The above death notice means that on the day Rebecca Goodrich died she was 90 years old, but Ætatis suæ ("aged") 91.

Following the birth of 15 children at Halifax, Mass., Rebecca's parents were still residing at Halifax in the 1790 federal census consisting of a household of 12 persons. By Oct. 1, 1798 Rebecca's parents had relocated to Pittsfield, Mass. where on that date Perez Ripley appears in the Direct Tax for the Town of Pittsfield. Perez Ripley is enumerated at Pittsfield in the Aug. 4, 1800 federal census as 00101-01001, consisting of 1 male age 16 to 25 (likely son Abner), 1 male over 44 years of age (Perez), 1 female of age 10 to 15 (likely dau. Ruth), and 1 female over 44 years of age (wife Parnel).

Parnel (Sturtevant) Ripley d. of record at Pittsfield Dec. 29, 1800 (Pittsfield TR.) Her death is entered in the Pittsfield records immediately following the listing of the three children of dau. Rebecca:

• Parnel the Wife of Perez Ripley Died Decr. 29th 1800.

On July 10, 1802 at Pittsfield, Josiah Goodrich, Jr. and Rebecca Ripley, both of Pittsfield, published their intent to marry. Josiah, the s. of Josiah Goodrich and Abigail Wolcott, was b. May 9 (bapt. May 11), 1783 at Wethersfield, Conn. and d. Oct 22, 1835 at Ware, Mass. By 1794 Josiah's parents relocated from Wethersfield, Conn. to Pittsfield.

Rebecca Ripley and Josiah Goodrich had three known children, all recorded at Pittsfield, who are summarized in their father's memorial.
