Mr. Don Goodman, Jr., of Atlanta, died Friday, March 27, 2009.
He was born on November 29, 1933 in Nashville, Tennessee. His parents were James Donald Goodman and Bylsen Hosse Goodman. He was raised in Richmond, Virginia and his family moved to Atlanta. He graduated from North Fulton High School, attended The Citadel and Presbyterian College, and graduated from Georgia State University, where he also did his post-graduate work.
Mr. Goodman was a Captain in the United States Army and was active in the National Guard Reserves. He worked in the sales division of Scott Paper Company, Anderson Box Company, Temple Inland and Time Incorporated.
He retired to devote his time to his avocation, baseball. Volunteer coaching led into umpiring and coaching as a certified community coach. He coached the Lovett School Junior Varsity team for three years and the Dunwoody Senior baseball league. He was the umpire coordinator for the teams from Lovett, Atlanta International School and Dunwoody High School. He coached football and basketball for the Northside Youth Organization, and was a Boy Scout leader.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, where he also taught Sunday school for a number of years.
He was married to the late Katherine Bryan Goodman, and is survived by their children; Merry Virginia Goodman Fitts and her husband, Joseph Barry Fitts, Jr., and James Donald Goodman III and his wife, Susan Raquel Hudson Goodman. He is also survived by five grandchildren; Joseph Barry Fitts, III, Grace Katherine Fitts, Lillian Virginia Fitts, Lucas Benjamin Fitts and Marshall Hosse Goodman.
A graveside service will be held at Arlington Cemetery in Sandy Springs, Saturday, April 4, 2009 at 1PM. Dr. John C. Bryan officiating. The family requests any donations to be made to the Atlanta Lab rescue. Online memories may be posted at www.mem.com.
