LAST OF FORMER SLAVES DEAD

Mattie Goodloe, 89, was born in Bondage

Mattie Goodloe believed by colored people of Binger to be the last of the race living here born in bondage, died at her home in the colored section of Binger about 9 o'clock Thursday morning, following an illness of about four weeks. As the Journal goes to press, no funeral arrangements have been made.
The deceased, 89 years old, according to her statements was born in slavery. She was thirteen years old at the outbreak of the Civil War, and she recalled many incidents of the war. She was the wife of Jim Goodloe, who talked much of his life as a slave., who died some three years ago.
The Goodloe's were the first of the colored race to settle in Binger at the opening of the country.
