Raised in Oklahoma, and then returning to Iowa as a youngster, she lived on what she called "the 40", which was the size of the acres her father received from his father. She went on to take her state exams to get her teaching certificate. She taught school at Dickersville and German Schools, teaching all grades in one-room schoolhouses.
