PEORIA, IL - Cynthia J. Goldsmith Atterbury, of Flat Rock, N.C., formerly of Peoria, Ill., died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008, at Elizabeth House in Flat Rock.
She was born in Warwick, N.Y., to James and Mildred Goldsmith and grew up in Goshen, N.Y., where she was a 1956 graduate of Goshen Central High School.
She attended Colorado Woman's College in Denver, Colo., and Katherine Gibbs in Providence, R.I. Prior to moving to Flat Rock, N.C., she resided for many years in the Baltimore, Md., area, Rancho Mirage, Calif., and most recently in Peoria, Ill.
As a young girl, she developed a strong love of nature and gardening, which remained an abiding commitment and source of pleasure throughout her life. She never lost her childhood sense of awe for nature or her passion for creating beautiful gardens.
Surviving are her husband, R. Rennie Atterbury III; a sister, Beryl Yungman of Warwick, N.Y.; a niece, Bry Yungman Stewart of Denver, Colo.; a son, Charles E. Conklin III; a stepson, S. Ward Atterbury of New York City; and a stepdaughter, Kendall C.B. Atterbury of Stratford, Conn.
Services and burial will be in New Jersey.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Four Seasons Hospice and Palliative Care, 571 S. Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731.
Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Directors and Cremation Memorial Center is in charge of the arrangements.
