Ava Goldsmith (maiden name: Pierson) died at home in Rio Vista, CA, at the age of 93.

Prior to living the past four-and-a-half years with her son, Paul, in Rio Vista, Ava was a long time resident of Sacramento. She was born in Sanger, CA, and she received her B.A. Degree from Fresno State College, maintaining a straight-A average in college. She obtained her first job after college in Sacramento at the initial opening of the Calif. State Dept. of Unemployment. In 1936, Ava married DuVal Goldsmith, a well-known plumbing contractor in Sacramento. Ava and DuVal did an excellent job of parenting their four children, all of whom graduated from college. Ava's mother, Fannie Pierson, was a chef at Slough House, in the days of the stage coach. In 1965, Ava Goldsmith became a social worker for the Sacramento County Welfare Department. Then, in 1967 she began her teaching career in Special Education at the Jesse Baker School in Elk Grove, where she taught until she was 72 years old.

Ava dearly loved her family, and she always invited family members and friends for dinner if they dropped by unexpectedly. Ava always used fresh meat and poultry and vegetables from her garden, creating the most delicious meals. Her children's friends all wanted to eat some of Ava's homemade bread and pies.

Ava Goldsmith grew up in the Church of the Brethren, and she raised her children to attend St. Paul's Episcopal Church and Trinity Cathedral in Sacramento. Ava was President of the P.T.A. at Marshall School in Sacramento. From 1943 to 1951, Ava and DuVal lived with their children on a 40-acre ranch near Folsom, which they were forced to sell to the government as a part of Folsom Dam Reservoir.

Ava Goldsmith loved wildlife, trees and flowers, the mountains, and the ocean, and she was especially close to her own cats and dogs, which she treated royally. Ava was an avid reader, enjoying books, magazines, and newspapers throughout her life. Ava loved to travel by automobile with her husband throughout Calif. and Nevada, and they drove across the United States on one trip to Florida. In 1974, Ava and DuVal accompanied their daughter, Barbara, and her husband, Darius, to Europe, which they thoroughly enjoyed. Following her husband's death in 1991, Ava lived with her son, Paul, for the past 14 years in Sacramento, and then in Rio Vista. Ava and Paul traveled to many places, including Maine, Canada, New Hampshire, Vermont, Montana, Colorado, New Mexico, and Oregon.

Ava Goldsmith is survived by: her four children, Paul Goldsmith, a retired Registered Civil Engineer for the Bridge Dept. of CAL-TRANS, Ava Odette Asbury, a retired elementary school teacher, and her husband, Myron Asbury, who live on a farm in Galt, Alyn Goldsmith, a retired Contra Costa County social worker, and his mate, Barbara Murfin, a retired Contra Costa County Conservator, Barbara Bahador, a teacher with a Master's Degree, who teaches at Agnews for the State of Calif., and her husband, Darius Bahador, a supervisor of Appraisers for San Francisco County; Ava's two granddaughters, Jaleh Bahador, a graduate of UCLA, and currently a law student at University of San Francisco, and Tamara Goldsmith, who attended Humbolt State University, her husband, Randy Zucker, a successful businessman in Marin County, and their daughter, Rachael Zucker, five years old, who is Ava's only great-grandchild.

Ava Goldsmith loved life, and she loved her family. Throughout her life, Ava always thought of the other person before herself. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, June 6, at Stewart Chapel, 189 North Second St., Rio Vista, CA, phone (707) 374-2352. Published in The Sacramento Bee on June 3, 2005.
