Ernest Edward Goff, Sr.

Ernest Edward Goff Sr., 82, died at his home Monday, May 3, 2010, surrounded by loved ones per his last wishes. Born Nov. 22, 1927, in West Monroe, Ernest, affectionately known as "Bud," "Buddy" or "Uncle Bud," graduated from LSU with a master's degree in education. Ernest was an Army veteran of World War II, where he served as a pharmacy technician for the troops. He taught math and science at Pride High School from 1955 through 1962 when he left to become the first training coordinator for Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 198 Apprenticeship Training Program, where he was a member of the union for 60 years. Ernest had a long and eclectic career as a Louisiana Department of Education fabrication inspector, serving in Pittsburgh, an apprenticeship instructor at the Baton Rouge Trade School and as the coordinator of the National Construction Apprenticeship Contest at Purdue University for 10 summers. He retired from the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training, where he served as the Louisiana state director from 1975 until 1996, and from the Baton Rouge Millwright Apprenticeship Program, where he was training director from 1996 until 1998. Ernest was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Annie Laura Goff; his loving in-laws, Alvin and Marguerite Virgie Altazin; two grandsons, Jamie Roth and Josh Brumfield; two brothers-in-law, Wade McKissick and Alvin Altazin Jr.; and numerous other loving relatives. He is survived by his adored wife of 63 years, Theresa; his five children and their spouses, Debbie and James Roth, Gloria Elizabeth Goff, Ernest Jr. and Wendy Goff, Dr. Mike Goff, and William Paul and Teena Goff; two sisters, Eleanor and Ann; two brothers-in-law, Ike and Earl; numerous special nephews and a special niece, Laura. The family wishes to express their gratitude to all the health-care professionals who cared for Ernest, especially Annette, Don and with a special thanks to Brandi, all of St. Joseph Hospice. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Joseph Hospice. Visiting will be at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Highway, on Friday, May 7, from 2 p.m. until memorial service at 2:30 p.m.
