Lucy Ansell Godfrey was the daughter of Walter Andrew Godfrey and his wife, Mary Indiana Wright. She was born in what was then Princess Anne County, Virginia (now city of Virginia Beach). She was married to Claude Lee Whitehurst on April 5, 1911.

"Married April 5, 1911 - Claude Lee Whitehurst, single, and Lucy Ansell Godfrey, single - Claude Lee Whitehurst, age 22, born in -and residing in Princess Anne County, Virginia, occupation Farmer, son of Lee J. Whitehurst and his wife, Sarah E. - Lucy Ansell Godfrey, age 18, born in and residing in Princess Anne County, Virginia, daughter of Walter A. Godfrey and his wife, Indiana"
