LTC (Ret) William David Glover died at Sentara Careplex Hospital, Hampton VA after a brief illness. He became a Christian at an early age at Mount Zoar Baptist Church, Durham, NC and was a faithful member of First Baptist Church, Hampton, VA at the time of his passing.
William was the first to attend college in his family. During his early years he balanced the rigors of a family farm with academic pursuits. He started his formal education in the Durham County Public Schools, subsequently graduating from Mill Grove High School ('46), North Carolina Agricultural & Technical College (BS, '50); and Hampton University (MS, '78); graduating with honors at every level.
A career soldier, William met the love of his life, Alicia, while stationed at Fort Meade, MD, and on Jan. 29, 1955 formed a bond that would never be broken. His military assignments took him to Germany, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, and various posts in the United States. His final tour was at Fort Monroe, VA where in 1978 he retired and decided to call the Tidewater area, home. Soon after retiring he obtained a MS degree in Guidance and Counseling at Hampton University and worked as a guidance counselor at Surry County High School until 1988. Never one to truly rest on his laurels he opted to pursue a dream he held since childhood. That dream was to own his own business. In 1988 he obtained and established a ServiceMaster franchise which he operated until truly retiring in 1998.
William always put his heart and soul into everything he did. Faith, family, Army, community; he always believed that as you travel life's freeways, we have an obligation to help our fellow man. He lived that ideal daily and was an outstanding husband, father, grandfather, mentor, and role model. His hobbies included traveling, photography, gardening, music, golf, writing and collecting books. He was a life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc and also a member of several organizations, a few of which include; Old Point Comfort Kiwanis Club, NAACP, Philippine American Community of the Peninsula, North Carolina A&T alumni Association.
