Marie's parents, William H. Gleason and Harriet J. 'Hattie' Crouch, both came from Michigan, where in their early twenties they married on October 27, 1875 at Calhoun County in central southern Michigan.
Within the next few years the young Gleason family moved far out west to California.
Marie Elizabeth Gleason was born a later child to the family. She had at least one older sister, Ruby I. Gleason, born September 20, 1882 in California. Marie was born eight years later, in 1890.
By the 1900 census, when Marie was ten, the family had settled in Shasta County, in central northern California.
By the 1910 census, 28-year-old Ruby and 20-year old Marie were still living as single young women in their parents' household. By then the Gleason family had moved down to Alameda County, several hundred miles to the south, in the East Bay Area.
In 1917, at age 27, Marie then met and married her husband, 31-year old William Vere Cruess, a successful university professor and renowned food scientist.
Marie and William settled there at their home, 951 Cragmont Ave., high up in the north Berkeley Hills, for many years, but they had no children together.
Marie became a portrait artist, and in 1955 she created a portrait of her retired husband, William.
In 1968, at age 78, Marie was widowed when William died and was buried here at nearby Sunset View, a mile northwest from their home.
Marie survivied for a couple more decades, until 1989, when she died at age 99. By then she was living some 15 miles to the west across the Bay in Marin County. She was brought back here to Sunset View, where she was cremated, and her ashes buried with those of her husband William.
