"Mrs Mary Ellen Corns died at her home 423 22nd Ave. at 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon of hardening of the arteries after an illness of several months.

She was the daughter of James and Hannah Glasgow and was born on her fathers farm one half mile west of Bellwood on Feb 12 1829. Her grandparents were of Scotch Irish descent and came to this country in 17?5 (year is partially smudged on microfilm) settling in Chester County and later moving to Huntingdon County and finally settled near Bellwood. She was married on Jan 16 1850 at Hollidaysburg to James M Corns who fought in the Mexican war and later served as a colonel in the Civil War and who preceded her to the grave having died at Shreveport, La in 1893. Mrs. Corns had many trying experiences during the Civil War living in Virginia when that state was the scene of so many conflicts.

She was the mother of eight children, one dying in infancy and another son P M Corns, dying at Roanoke, Va in 1896. She is survived by following children: Hiram A of Vancouver, Thomas J of Woodville, Texas, Mrs H W Swartz of Pittsburgh, Mrs W G Swartz of Altoona and Misses Emma and Flora at home.

She is survived by one sister Mrs. Caroline Cherry of Tipton. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren.

She was a faithful member of the Fairview Methodist Church. Funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon a the Fairview Church at 2 o'clock. Interment in the Rose Hill Cemetery."

"Mrs Mary Ellen Glasgow Corns, a venerable and respected resident of the Eleventh Ward died at her home 423 22nd Ave. at 1 o'clock yesterday morning of diseases incident to old age. She was the daughter of James and Hannah Glasgow, deceased and was born near Bellwood Feb 12 1828. In 1850 she was united in marriage to James** W Corns, a Mexican and Civil War veteran who preceded her to the grave in 1893. Mrs. Corns during her life spent in the State of Virginia, witnessed many trying experiences during the Civil War. She was the mother of eight children, six of who survive, Hiram A of Vancouver, B.C, Thomas J. of Woodville Texas, Mrs. H W Swartz of Pittsburgh, Mrs. W H Swartz of this city and Misses Emma and Flora at home. One sister, Mrs. Caroline Cherry of Tipton, also survives. She is survived by 16 grand children and 19 great grandchildren. The deceased was a devoted and faithful worker in the Fairview Methodist Church of which she was a member. Interment in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Mary Ellen was the daughter of James Glasgow and Hannah Turner. She was the wife of Col. James M. Corns, 8th VA Calvary. Mary Ellen Glasgow married James Marshall Corns on January 16, 1850 in Hollidaysburg, Blair Co. PA. They had 8 children. James left his family in Louisa, KY sometime before 1870. Mary Ellen never saw him again. He changed the spelling of his surname to Cornes. He married Laura Holland in June 1870 in Harrison County, Texas. He had not gotten a divorce from Mary Ellen. After his death in 1893 Mary Ellen and Laura both applied for James' Mexican War pension. Mary Ellen was awarded his pension as his first wife.
