Obituary

GAMBILL, Mrs. Mary Bell Glasgow. A resident of the Blakeford at Green Hills, died at her home on October 2, 2008. A service of Worship to celebrate her life will be held at West End United Methodist Church on Monday, October 6, 2008 at 11 a.m.. Interment will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. in Reed Hall, at West End United Methodist Church prior to the service.

Mrs. Gambill was born in Nashville, TN on August 21, 1910, the oldest of six children to Sammie Keith Glasgow and Dr. McPheeters Glasgow at their home, Montrose, on Old Golf Club Lane.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Benjamin D. S. Gambill.

Mrs. Gambill was educated at Peabody Demonstration School, Wellesley College and the University of Chicago. She was an active leader in local community affairs, including the Junior League of Nashville, Travellers Rest and the YWCA. She was past President of the Tennessee Chapter of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America. She was also a member of the International Study Club, the Query Club, Belle Meade Country Club, Cheekwood, and the Centennial Club. She was a longstanding member of West End United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her sons, Benjamin D. S. Gambill, Jr. and Thomas K. Gambill, and her daughters-in-law, Katie Herron Gambill, Mary Stamps Gambill and Barbara D. Jenkins.

She was preceded in death by her first son, William Glasgow Gambill.

Mrs. Gambill greatly enjoyed the love of her grandchildren, Benjamin D. S. Gambill III (Mary Carlisle), Katherine Scott Gambill, Thomas Keith Gambill, Jr., Phelps Cooper Gambill, Edmund D. Gambill, Mary Elizabeth Gambill and Thomas J. Gambill (Kelley), and her great-grandchildren, Julia Bell Gambill and Thomas Spencer Gambill.

Mrs. Gambill is also survived by her brother, Samuel McPheeters Glasgow, Jr. and wife Barbara Leake. She is preceded in death by her sisters, Margaret Anderson Glasgow Stanford, Elizabeth Keith Glasgow Phillips, Grace Ellen Glasgow Watkins and Sammie Keith Glasgow Lauderdale.

The family is very grateful for the years of service and devotion to Mrs. Gambill by Ann Schmittou and Debbie Harville.

Active Pallbearers will be Allen C. Brown, Dr. John Bruno, Charles Cox, Jr., Bryant Leake Glasgow, Dr. Samuel McPheeters Glasgow III, William A. Lauderdale, Jr., Joe B. Palmer, Albert H. Phillips, Frank Reynolds, Robert G. Wasik, William Watkins, Jr. and Harry Williams.
