ADKINS FLORENCE Passed away at her home in Oakland on May 3, 2003 at the age of 71. Originally from Revere, Mass., she spent the last 47 years of her life in the Oakland-Piedmont area. She will be deeply missed by her daughter, Madeleine Adkins, of Oakland, her sister Lyn Gladstone, of Marin, her brother Melvin Gladstone, of Berkeley, and her stepchildren, Kathleen Adkins Baer, Christine Adkins Toscano, Jeffery Adkins, and Scott Nisbet. She will also be deeply missed by her many nieces, nephews, stepgrandchildren, other relatives, and loving friends. In recent years Florence enjoyed following current events, reading, playing cribbage, visiting with family and friends locally, and also keeping in touch with far-flung friends and family via the internet. Florence was a volunteer for many years and in many capacities at Kaiser Hospital in Oakland, and she spent the last few years teaching seniors to use the internet. Most recently she and her friend, Bobbie!Mercer, taught woodworking to young teens at New Age Academy in Berkeley. She also served on the board of All Creatures, a local animal welfare-rescue organization. She will long be remembered for her dry wit, her keen understanding of human nature, and her sense of the absurd. A private memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 11. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to All Creatures, P.O. Box 3664, San Rafael 94912 or to a donor's favorite charity.
