Thomas J. Givens, the eldet son of John and Mary (Reed) Givens, was one of the early settlers in Black Township, Posey County, Indiana and politically active in southwestern Indiana in the early 1800s. He moved with his family in the late 1790s to Kentucky where his parents established a farm in Lincoln County. He married Rachel Jones on October 22, 1905 shortly before the family moved to Indiana. Rachel was the daughter of the Reverend Samuel Jones, who was the first minister to preach in the Mount Vernon, Indiana area. Tom established a farm and purchased property on June 4, 1807 in what was to be the town of Mount Vernon. In 1811 Private Thomas Givens joined Captain David Robb's Company of Mounted Riflemen, Indiana Militia. He fought in the Battle of Tippecanoe, where he was slightly wounded. Thomas considered himself a farmer, but he also operated what had been credited as the first Posey County inn. His most visible activities were as a community leader and politician. He served as a judge and later as a state senator. He was a strong supporter of the candidacy of Andrew Jackson for U. S. President. In 1830 he was Assistant Marshall for the taking of the U S Census. He was an active member of the Regular Baptist Bethal Church, of which his father-in-law was minister and held a number of lay leadership positions including Associate Moderator for the state Salem Assocation. Thomas died near his Mount Vernon home on July 23, 1834, leaving his wife and children a substantial estate. He and Rachel had the following chldren: Polly, Michael Baker, Maria, Jackson C., Julia, Elizabeth, Thomas Jefferson, Martha and (my ancestor) Jeremiah Cash.
