Laura Alice Gipson born 20 Jul 1908 in Humansville, Missouri. She was the oldest daughter of Charles Albert Gipson and Orpha Lee South. She had to take care of her younger sisters at an early age when her mother died in 1922. After her mother died, her father took all the girls and traveled from Missouri to California picking fruit along the way to help finance their travels. She said that her father renovated a vehicle into an early 'camper' with a fold out stove and kitchen and they lived out of that until settling in the Bakersfield area and the Yuba City area until ultimately settling in at Modesto, California. Alice married Herman Alexander Chambers, Sr., on 23 Sep 1927 in Bakersfield, Kern, California. They had two sons. Subsequently they divorced and each remarried others. Grandma worked very hard her entire life. She was an independent woman and was not afraid of anyone or anything. Ever. She loved visiting extended family and she and her sisters were the driving force behind the Gipson Girls Family Reunions.I just pulled out her genealogy she personally passed on to me....she was far ahead of her time! I could never untangle the relationships she had so carefully documented on binder paper. Now, with a computer program, it is time to enter in all those names, dates, and places and there are so many of them! I'd forgotten how tenacious and how organized she was and now I am very thankful for it. She wrote to distant relatives until they answered as much as they could. She addressed envelopes, stamped them, and had each family organized and ready to send another letter of questions if she didn't get all the information she expected. She wasn't young herself when she started this but the people she was writing to, and who were replying, were very elderly. I can tell from the handwriting. It will be interesting to see what turns up in all these letters and diagrams and such. A binder, paper, pen, pencil, stamps, envelopes....and paperclips & staples. That was her 'genealogy program'. Amazing what she was able to accomplish and that I am still getting family information from her and she's been gone since 1998. Thank you Grandma. You will definitely NEVER be forgotten! I also appreciate her efforts to work on my grandfather's side of the family. I appreciate finding the small photos and news articles about them. Even when they are hidden inside something else. Typical. When my older children were in school, I was able to come down once a week and help clean her house. It was nice to be able to spend that time with her along with our youngest son who shares a birthday with her. I'm grateful I was able to see her one last time, a month before she died, in 1998 while home visiting from Okinawa. Thank you for being a 'driving force' Grandma. You accomplished so much with that energy and I learned "how to get it done" from you! Love you much and miss you. Your great-grandsons love and miss you too.

Happy New Year Grandma. Black-eyed peas dinner for good luck in the New Year every January 1st is what you told me and I remember eating them. Still don't like them but it's a good memory.
