George was also an accomplished auto mechanic and preferred Chevrolets above all. He was known for his stamina in driving long distances in any weather conditions. He once commented that his '50 Chevy was part "mountain goat" and would climb snow covered hills where other cars couldn't. He always drove a manual transmission and taught his kids to drive "stick". To the rest of his nieces and nephews who drove automatics, he would exclaim, "You are not driving the car; the car is driving you."
