Byron E. Gilliland, 99, of Kearney passed away Friday, July 27, 2012 at the St. Luke's Good Samaritan Village in Kearney. Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 1, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at the Horner Lieske McBride & Kuhl Funeral and Cremation Services in Kearney with Rev. Greg Mast officiating. Burial will be at the Kearney Cemetery. Military rites will be provided at the Cemetery by the Kearney American Legion Post #52, Kearney V.F.W. Post #759, and the Nebraska National Guard Funeral Honors Team. Horner Lieske McBride & Kuhl Funeral and Cremation Services are in charge of arrangements.

Byron was born January 9, 1913 in Eddyville, Nebraska to George and Hazel (Hedges) Gilliland. The family moved to Kearney in 1926. At that time, Byron worked on several farms in the area to support his family and help his mother raise his brothers and sisters. He married Ethel Carey on January 31, 1942 in Kearney. He joined the Army on March 4, 1942 and served during WW II. After the service Byron and Ethel farmed near Overton for a few years. They moved to Kearney and he worked as a mechanic for Kearney Crete and Block. He enjoyed gardening and doing yard work. Work was his hobby. Byron's faith was a very important part of his life, and he shared that faith with his family.
