Lou Emma Barrow, 84, Denison, died Saturday, March 22, 2008, at a Topeka hospital. She was born Nov. 19, 1923, the daughter of Charles and Floy Miller Gilliland. She graduated from Denison High School and in 1984, at age 60, graduated cum laude from Washburn University with a bachelor of arts degree in social work. Mrs. Barrow was a homemaker and had lived on the same family farm southwest of Denison for 62 years. She was a social worker and director of Friendly Visitors of Catholic Community Services in Topeka. She had also worked at Barrow Fur Company in Denison and at Fresh Start in Holton. She had been a member of Denison Union Church. She was a member of Phi Kappa Phi honorary fraternity at Washburn. She married Vernon L. Barrow on Jan. 16, 1942, in Topeka. He died May 10, 2002. She also was preceded in death by a son, Vernon C. "Red" Barrow, on Feb. 21, 2007; and her sisters, Lillian Manes and Mary Layton. Survivors include four sons, Ray Barrow and wife Sandy, Holton, and Bill Barrow and wife Judy, Dan Barrow and wife Deb and Leo Barrow, all of Denison; two daughters, Sharon Barrow and Dee Petree and husband Barry, all of Holton; a daughter-in-law, Debbie Barrow, Valley Falls; 13 grandchildren, Sam, Willie, Lace, Zac, Charlotte, Lyle, Troy, Julie, Lori, Michelle, Rich, Jim and Charlie; and 21 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. March 27 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Interment will be in Denison Cemetery.
