Muscatine Journal Dec 17, 1880, Friday. Obituary for Courtland Gilkyson.
A WELL-KNOWN FARMER OF LAKE TOWNSHIP THREWS HIMSELF UNDER A TRAIN OF CARS AT MOLINE, ILL.
Frm Saturday’s Daily, 11th.
News was received here this morning by telegraph that Courtland Gilkyson of this county, had committed suicide in a fie of temporary insanity by throwing himself under a train of cars of at Moline, ill. The telegram was sent by the coroner of Rock Island county. Horace Gilkyson, son of the deceased, telegraphed to his mother, who was at Wilton, as to what ws to be done, and received for reply that the body would be sent to this city by the cars this evening.
Deceased owned and lived on a farm in Lake township, about eight miles from this city, and was in good circumstances. The body will be taken there for burial. The funeral will probably take place tomorrow. Mr. Gilkyson was aged between 55 and 56.
The deceased was a sober, industrious man, and usually quiet and peaceable in disposition. On account of his unpleasant and unbearable conduct towards his wife, however, she was obliged to leave him about three months ago and go to her father,Mr. Scott, in Wilton. The only daughter of Mr. Gilkyson is now in Philadelphia, whither she went last summer-on a visit to relatives. His two sons, both young men, remained with him at his home in Lake township Last Thursday evening, they went to a party at a neighbor’s, and when they returned in the night he was missing. Search was made for him in this city and elsewhere without learning of his whereabouts till news of his death reached them. Financially, the deceased was in good circumstances, having a valuable farm and one of the best residences in Lake township. He was not a member of any church. Only once, so far as we can learn, he had shown a disposition to take his own life, and that was last Thursday, when his sons thought he had make some preparations to hang himself. There is little doubt now that he suffered aberrations of mind amounting to insanity.
