Harvey was the son of Thomas Gilkerson and Janet Strobridge. They married 22 Feb 1839 in Barnet, Caledonia County, Vermont. Harvey was apparently their first child.
His siblings were Meroe Louise, Elizabeth S, Amelia Helen, Curtis Harvey, Jessie Emily and Orrin Judson Gilkerson.
Thomas and Janet must have been part of the "westward movement" in the mid 1850's from Barnet to Will County, Illinois. They later moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota.
