Ann Giles Butler, retired educator, historical preservationist
Ann Giles Butler, a native of New Orleans, retired educator and promoter of historical preservation, died Friday, July 03, 2009, at the age of 82 in Folsom, CA. She lived in New Orleans all of her life until she was forced to leave her beloved home due to Hurricane Katrina.
She was born October 16, 1926, at Touro Infirmary, New Orleans. She was a graduate of Eleanor McMain High School, Newcomb College, Tulane University, where she received her Bachelors of Fine Arts in 1947. She did further study at Tulane University and received her teaching certificate. While at Newcomb, she was a member of Phi Mu Sorority.
After receiving her teaching certificate she taught at Belle Chasse High, Live Oak Jr. High, Peters Jr. High and after many years retired from teaching at Sophie B. Wright Middle School.
She was a history enthusiast and was very active in many societies. She was an Honorary Regent of the Spirit of ‘76 Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, President of La Louisianne Chapter of Colonial Dames 17th Century, President of Chalmette Chapter, Daughters of 1812, President of the New Orleans Freedom's Foundation of Valley Forge, and Honorary State President of the Louisiana Society of 1812. She served as Senior President of Bienville Society, Children of the American Revolution and Senior State President Louisiana Society C.A.R. She was a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Mary Hall Mantooth Chapter in Lufkin, TX, the Thomas Noble Chapter, Daughters of American Colonist, Fine Arts Club of New Orleans, and the Julian Poydras Home Auxiliary. She was also Czarina of the Alexis Ball.
She was the wife of the late Col. Bruce Baird Butler, DDS. She also was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Upton Wright Giles, Sr. and Mollie Esther Soltz, and her brother Dr. Upton Wright Giles, Jr. She is survived by her daughters, Charlotte Bracht of Folsom, Calif., Priscilla Fraser of Conyers, GA, and Elizabeth Thomason of San Antonio, Texas; seven grandchildren, Farra and Daron Bracht, Stephen and Timothy Fraser, Sarah Isabel and James Bruce Thomason, and one great grandchild Ford Merrill.
A memorial service will be held at Church of the Annunciation, 4505 South Claiborne Avenue, New Orleans, Louisiana on Saturday August 22 at 2pm. The family will receive guests 30 minutes prior to and 30 minutes after the service in the sanctuary. She will then be interred at Rosemound Cemetery, Commerce, Texas with her parents, and Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, DC, with her husband.
