Mary Ellen Gilbert Bryant was the daughter of Asa Gilbert of Montgomery County, Tn. She had been married to Richard M. Bryant. According to her death certificate, she died by suicide by drinking lye. she was buried May 7, 1933 in the Sikeston Cemetery. A story submitted from a Ulah Pitts of Morehouse, MO follows: Mary Gilbert Bryant, mother of Robert Lee Bryant, came from Tennessee to Missouri for a visit. Mary was said to be a small, thin lady in her 80s at this time. She was very unhappy in Missouri and wanted to go back to Tennessee. The house where Robert Lee and Lana Maude Bryant lived was a little less than one mile East of Morehouse, MO. You had to cross over a wooden bridge and the railroad tracks to get to the house. Mary must have been very unhappy because she listened for the train whistle and ran to the railroad tracks where she proceeded to stand. The family saw her and grabbed her off the tracks. Lana Maude (Maudie as she was called) put away everything she thought might be harmful to Mary. One day, however, they found her lying down and next to her was a can of lye with a spoon in it. She had apparantly mixed the lye with water and drank it. A doctor was called. She apparantly vomited sometime after drinking the lye water, vomiting up hunks of meat. The doctor said she "took one hell of a dose." She died sometime after that.
