Edna Frances Black, age 96, of Mount Vernon, died Sunday November 11, 2007 at the Kobacker House in Columbus. Edna was born December 9, 1910 in Butler Township, Knox County to John William and Clara (Dennis) Giffin and had spent most of her lifetime in the Knox County Area. She was a graduate of Columbia Elementary School, a 1929 graduate of Mount Vernon High School and was a graduate of the Mount Vernon Business College. Edna had been employed by the Mount Vernon Telephone Company, was co-owner with her husband Clifford Black of the Farm and Home Hardware in Danville, had worked at Mercy Hospital and Bair's Dry Cleaners both in Mount Vernon. All the while helping to maintain the family farm and household and raise her four children.
Edna was a member of the First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ in Mount Vernon, had been active in the Clinton Grange Auxiliary, the Golden Times Club in Fredericktown and was a member of the Mount Vernon High School, Class of 1929 Reunion Committee.
Surviving are her son John (Elizabeth) Black of Newark; her daughters Nancy A. Black of Mount Vernon, Susan E. (William) Bynner of Plain City and Cheryl (William) Morey of Heath; 8 grandchildren; a step grandson; 15 great grandchildren; 4 step great grandchildren; a great great granddaughter; her brother Walter Giffin of Fishers, Indiana and sisters Mary (Ralph) Miller of Newark and Helen Cochran of Mount Vernon. Besides her parents, Edna was preceded in death by her husband Clifford D. Black, brother Franklin Giffin and sisters Olive Derbaum, Loree Patton, Lena Spearman, Corda Lifer and Laura Smith.
Visitation with the family will be Thursday from 1 pm to 3 pm and 6 pm to 8 pm and Friday from noon until 1:30 pm at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 East High Street, Mount Vernon, Ohio 43050. Funeral services will be Friday at 1:30 pm at the funeral home with Rev. Jamie Gump officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.
