Bessie Elizabeth Giddens was born October 20, 1908 in rural Pender County to Griffith A. and Mary Bowen Giddens. One of eight children, she and her family shared a life of farming and dedication to God. Her father was a minister and organizer of Antioch Church where she was a devoted and loyal member. On December 10, 1927 she married Samuel Thomas Blanton, Sr. of the same community. To their union was born Bernice Blanton (deceased at age 17), Samuel Thomas "Tommy" Blanton, Jr., Evelyne Blanton (Mills), Judith Blanton (Rawls), Geneva Blanton (Smith), and Diane Blanton (Giddeons). Bessie's family was her life, her church and her faith were her foundation, and her garden was her pleasure. It was not important to Ms Bessie that she have material goods but she took pride in preparing for her family and the entire community; so much so that her domain was the nucleous for miles around where the weary and dejected came. Her humble spirit drew all who knew her to a warm and soothing atmosphere. Physically, Ms Bessie was expressly neat in appearance always assuring that she portrayed a feminine yet stately look. Her grandchildren remember her well for the little "horsey" rides on her lap and her four sons-in-law and one daughter-in-law were favored as if they were her own. She never received great honors, never wished for attention, and never claimed a spot in the crowds; yet she must have been the very one the wise man spoke of in Proverbs 31. I could never imagine anyone fitting the mold of that virtuous woman any better than my "Mama". She rests asleep in the Antioch Church Cemetery in the hope of a glorious resurrection which was her faith.
