The daughter of Martin Gibson and Patience Burk, Rebecca married James Atkisson on November 25, 1858 in Grundy County, after the death of James' first wife, Margaret. They lived in Missouri until around 1873, then moved to Douglas County, Colorado, where James served as a minister until shortly before his death in late 1880. James was granted a homestead in Douglas County just a couple of months before he died, and it's possible Rebecca lived there for as long as five years before moving back to Boone County, where she appears to have had family like her sister, Cynthia (Gibson) Shock, who is buried next to Rebecca.
