IPSWICH, MA — Josephine E. (Towler) Gibbons, 81, wife of the late Harry F. Gibbons, died on Wednesday evening, May 13, 2009 at the Beverly Hospital.

Born in the Bronx, N.Y. on July 29, 1927, she was the daughter of the late William and Mary (Sheehan) Towler. Josephine graduated at the age of 16 from Cathedral High School in Manhattan, N.Y.

After graduation, she had worked for six years as a secretary at Ellis Island before marrying Harry. They had eight children together and dedicated her life to raising her family.

In later years, Josephine and Harry volunteered to help open an orphanage in Santiago, Chile. They spent years working with the Archdiocese in both Chile and Argentina, South America. After moving back to the States, she worked with an adoption agency for several years continuing their life work.

Josephine's life was dedicated to helping the under privileged and she will be remembered as a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and best friend. She has lived in Waccabuc, N.Y., New York, Gloucester, Bedford, N.Y., and most recently in Ipswich.

She is survived by her seven children, Kathleen Gibbons of Pensacola, Fla., Christine Sosa and husband Alex of Newburyport, James Gibbons of North Andover, Maryanne Michel and husband Kevin of Rockport, JoEllen Hoover and husband Fred of Largo, Fla., Maureen Higgins of Marblehead, Jacqueline Amero and husband Jeffrey of Rockport; grandchildren, Tara Bailey, Eric, Mark and Julian Sosa, Harry and James Gibbons, Genevieve Ebacher, Coleen, Christopher, Patrick and Matthew Gibbons, Melissa and Paul Michel, Emily and Michael Marzan, Kayla Higgins, Julia and Brian Amero; two great-grandchildren, Talan Morton, Austin Ebacher; her sister Gertrude Stumph and husband Thomas; and daughter-in-law Karen Gibbons. In addition to her husband Harry, she was predeceased by her loving son, Michael Gibbons.

ARRANGEMENTS: Her funeral will be held from the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington St., Gloucester, on Monday at 10:15 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass in St. Ann's Church at 11 a.m. The visiting hours will be held on Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. The burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery. Contributions may be made to Franciscan Monastery of Saint Clare, 920 Centre St., Jamaica Plain, MA 02130.
