The Belle Banner, April 23, 1931 - Estella Spurgeon - Mrs. Albert Spurgeon - The very sudden death of Mrs. Albert Spurgeon was a shock to her many friends. Recently she had been in poor health, and was rushed to a St. Louis hospital last week when a turn for the worse but blood poisoning had already set in. Mrs. Spurgeon was Miss Stella Gibbons, a Belle High School girl before marriage some four or five years ago. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Gibbons of Lanes Prairie. Besides her husband and parents she is survived by her sisters, Miss Veta of the home, Mrs. Elsie Cordsmeyer of Vichy, Mrs. Naomi Underwood of St. Louis and a brother, Everett of Cuba, Mo. Funeral services were held last Monday afternoon at Skaggs cemetery. (From contributor, Ellen)

The Belle Banner, April 30, 1931 - Estella Spurgeon - Mrs. Estella C. Spurgeon (nee Gibbons), beloved wife of Albert K. Spurgeon, departed this life April 18, 1931, at 1 p.m. in the Overland Hospital, Overland, Missouri. Her illness was brief. She was born August 21, 1906, and reared in this state. Her infant child preceded her in death October 25, 1928. She leaves to mourn her loss, her husband, parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Gibbons, three sisters, Mrs. A. E. Cordsmeyer, Mrs. B. L. Underwood and Miss Veta Gibbons, and one brother, E. A. Gibbons, all of this state.

She united with the Church of Christ at Liberty in August, 1923, Rev. Diestelkamp officiating in the baptismal services. She lived an exemplary life up to the time of her death. Her little testament was a daily companion to her, even found among her belonging at the hospital. She and her husband had been residing in St. Louis for four years, but recently moved to Cuba, Missouri, intending to make that their future home.

All that remained that was mortal of Mrs. Spurgeon was brought to her father's home on Sunday and the day following taken to the "Little church" Skaggs Chapel, where she was laid to rest. Rev. E. A. Odell read a portion of the 14th chapter of St. John, which was comforting as well as his sermon. The songs too were very touching and appropriate, especially, "There will be no disappointment in Heaven." The crowd was immense, notwithstanding the threatening weather, which bespoke much for her and hers. We felt much pleased as well as honored to see friends from Cuba, St. Louis and many other places present. --One that loved her. (From contributor, Ellen)
