DENISE MARIE GIBBONS
A registered nurse and United States Air Force flight nurse, died while hospitalized at Inova Alexandria Hospital on July 18, 2013 of natural causes. She was 62.
The cause of death was complications from kidney failure, said a son, Jeffrey Spoon.
Denise retired from nursing in the 1990s and settled in the Washington DC area in 2004. In 1991, she served as a flight nurse in Saudi Arabia and Oman during Operation Desert Storm with 167th Airlift Wing, West Virginia Air National Guard. She also was a member of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and deeply loved her Jack Russell companion, Sammy.
Denise was born in Atlanta, GA in 1950, spent her early childhood in Miami, FL and graduated high school in Howell, MI. Denise received her nursing degree from Shepherd University, Shepherdstown, WV in 1983. She served in the United States Air Force in the early 1970s and the West Virginia Air National Guard in the early 90s.
Survivors include her sister, Lori Jean Baldwin, of Martinsburg, WV; sons, Jeffrey Spoon of Arlington, VA and Matthew Spoon, of Durham, NC. Memorial services will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church, in Martinsburg, WV on September 14, at 1 p.m. She will be laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery in early 2014.
