LANCASTER - Charlotte M. Allen, age 80, of Lancaster, died on Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at Grant Regional Health Center in Lancaster. She was born on Nov. 11, 1923, in Mifflin township, the daughter of Harrison and Alma (Nolen) Gibbon.
The family moved to Mineral Point where Charlotte graduated from high school. She attended UW-Madison and was a graduate of Madison Business College.
On Nov. 2, 1946, she married her high school sweetheart, Francis "Bud" Allen. He preceded her in death on Jan. 13, 2000. They lived in Illinois for a few years and then returned to Wisconsin; living in Lancaster since 1954.
She became food service director of the Lancaster Schools in 1959 after working in the program for two years. She held that position until her death. Charlotte also had a private catering service, the Arrow Inn, that she and her husband owned and operated in Lancaster. They named it after the school's logo, the "Arrows."
Charlotte had served on the diaconate of the Congregational Church for several terms, was on the advisory committee for the Southwest Wisconsin Technical College and had been a chairperson for the Wisconsin School Food Service Association. She served as president of the Chapter 14 Wisconsin Food Service Association for 17 years and was a member of the state board for commodities for three years.
Charlotte also taught Sunday school at the Congregational Church for more than 17 years. She and Bud were motorcycle travelers and had traveled to every state in the nation, except Alaska, reaching most of them on the Gold Wing (even with a broken leg in a cast).
She is survived by two daughters, Debbra (Dwaine) Werner, Sun Prairie, and Rebecca (Mark) Gordon, Blue Grass, Iowa; five grandchildren, Paula (fiance, Lenny Hein) Werner, Portage, Scott (Karen) Ambort, Lancaster, Derek (Karrie) Werner, Edgerton, Christopher Ambort, Bloomington, and Jason Ambort, Dixon, Iowa; and six great-grandchildren, Taylor and Mason Ambort, Katlynn Werner, Alexis Ambort and Hazel and Lillian Ambort.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bud; her parents; and her brother, Orrin Gibbon.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 7, 2004, at 2 p.m. at the LANCASTER CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH with the Rev. Mark Dieter officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Lancaster.
