Sister Maureen Gengler, Franciscan Sister of Perpetual Adoration, 85, died Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005, at Villa St. Joseph, La Crosse.

Sister Maureen was born to Joseph and Lavena (Voellinger) Gengler on Sept. 28, 1919, in Spokane, Wash. She entered St. Rose Convent on Aug. 14, 1936, and professed vows in 1939. Sister Maureen ministered as a music teacher for five years before teaching on the elementary level from 1945 to 1951 and the secondary level from 1951 to 1976 in schools in Iowa, Montana, Oregon, Washington and Wisconsin. In 1976, Sister Maureen joined the Viterbo College (University) staff as assistant professor of English, a position she held until 1994, when she retired at St. Rose Convent.

Sister Maureen was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings, Joseph and Rita Ann.

Friends may call after 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, when the body will be met at St. Rose Convent, La Crosse. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday in Mary of the Angels Chapel. The Rev. Thomas O'Neill, chaplain, Viterbo University, will preside at the Mass of Christian Burial at10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 2, in Mary of the Angels Chapel. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, La Crosse.

Memorials may be sent to Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, 912 Market St., La Crosse, WI 54601-8800.
