Joseph Geller enlisted in the U.S. Navy in early 1918 in New York City, trained at Newport, RI and served on the USS Arkansas, USS New Mexico and USS Texas before his discharge in 1919.

By the 1920 U.S. Census, he was single, living in Seattle and working as an electrician.

Joe married Lera Inez Carter (1903-84) in Grays Harbor County, WA on 1 May 1926. They had one daughter, Joyce, then divorced in December 1928.

During World War II, Joe worked at the Bremerton Navy Shipyard in Washington State.
