Edna Winter
was born May 16, 1922 to Dietrich and Lena (Harmdierks) Gehrels in Perham, Minnesota. As a young girl, she moved with her family to Huron, South Dakota in 1923, and Alpena, South Dakota in 1928. In 1934, they moved to Pipestone, Minnesota where Edna was confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church and graduated from high school in 1940 as Salutatorian of her class. Edna wanted to be a teacher and when her father gave her a choice of a couple of cows or to pay college tuition as her dowry, Edna chose college and the rest is history. After Edna graduated from Mankato College as a teacher, she taught in a rural school near Ruthton, Minnesota (first class was 8 boys), then east of Hardwick, Minnesota, and then Pipestone County country school till 1947. On June 8, 1947, Edna was united in marriage to Herman Winter. Following their marriage, they lived in Pipestone until 1950 when they moved to a farm three miles east of Jasper, Minnesota. One year later, they moved to a farm a mile northeast of Jasper and lived there for 52 years and raised three children. Edna loved teaching and the children always brought a smile to her face so when she was offered a position at the Hardwick School she took advantage of it. Edna took evening college classes for six years and received her BA degree at Southwest Minnesota State College, Marshall, Minnesota. She taught school in the Hardwick / Luverne School District from 1966 to 1984. In May, 2003, Edna and Herman became residents of the Jasper Sunrise Village. Herman preceded her in death on August 20, 2003. Shortly after Herman's death, Edna moved to her son's home in Brookston, Minnesota. On Monday, December 13, 2010, Edna died under hospice care at her son's home in Brookston at the age of 88 years, six months and 27 days.

Edna was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Jasper, Minnesota where she was very active in the Ladies Aide, Helping Hands, Alter Guild and on the Sunday School Staff. She enjoyed reading, knitting and needlepoint. She was a KOP in the TOPS organization, and she was involved in the community center. Edna and Herman often visited with family and friends, and they loved to dance, bowl, play cards and garden.

She is lovingly remembered by her two children, Carol Rabe and her husband Steven of Big Stone City, South Dakota, Donald Winter and his wife Sherry of Brookston, Minnesota; her daughter-in-law, Debra Winter of Tyler, Minnesota; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Anna Jones of Spring Valley, California; her sister-in-law, Phyllis Gehrels of Council Bluffs, Iowa and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman; her son, Kenneth; her parents; three brothers, John, George and Fritz Gehrels; and three sisters-in-laws, Leona, Erma, and Helen.
