| Birth: | Dec., 1844 Clarion County Pennsylvania, USA | | Death: | Feb. 12, 1925 New Jersey, USA | With very great sorrow the people of Clarion learned of the death of S. Ross Gathers, a long time well known and highly respected citizen of Clarion, who passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Riley Allen, on Thursday, February 12, 1925, at Bridgeton, N. J., at the age of 80 years, 1 month and 14 days.
Mr. Gathers was born in Piney township, Clarion county, in 1844, the son of Henry and Mary Gathers, and was one of a large family of children, of whom he was the last living. He grew to manhood at the place of his birth.
He became one of the most expert teamsters in all this section of country and it was said of him that he could drive his team farther, haul heavier loads and keep his team in better condition than most any other teamster here at the time. He was always kind to and careful of his horses.
This was typical of the man -- he was always kind to his family and friends and considerate of others at all times.
Mr. Gathers was a loyal supporter of the Union during the Civil War, and was a member of Co. H, 155th Reg. Penna. Vols. in which he served with great devotion and valor, being discharged at the conclusion of the war in June 1865.
He was united in marriage with Miss Julina C. Finefrock, daughter of Jacob and Esther Finefrock, who preceded him in death thirteen years ago. To their union were born ten children, seven of whom survive, as follows: Mrs. Mary Allison, Coverdale; Mrs. Elizabeth Cropp, Franklin; Mrs. Eva Ensley, Connellsville; Harry Gathers, Sligo; Mrs. Verna Allen, Bridgeton, N.J.; Mrs. Sella Sweet, New Kensington, and Marshall Gathers, W.VA. He is also survived by 26 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
In 1923 Mr. Gathers met with an automobile accident in which he had his left hip badly damaged, the injury extending over to the backbone. From this injury he never recovered, and undoutedly his death was hastened by it.
His body was brought to Clarion and taken to the home of his nephew, Henry M. Gathers, 136 Grand Ave., where the funeral was held last Sunday afternoon Feb. 15th, the Rev. C. J. Warner of the First Methodist Church, of which the deceased had been a member for many years, conducted the services and the interment was made in the Clarion cemetery.
