Charles, son of Clarence and Mary Ethel (Norris) Gates, grew up on the Southside of Indianapolis. He attended St. Catherine and St. Ann Schools and graduated from Decatur Central High School in 1939.
Charles served in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII from 1942 to 1946. He was employed at Allison in Maywood for 35 years, retiring in 1976. Retirement years were active with gardening, woodworking, travel and various real estate projects with his wife, Catherine.
Charles was preceded in death by his brother, Harold Gates and sister, Mary Catherine (Clark) and grandchild, Derek Gates.
Charles is survived by his wife, Catherine, the love of his life for the past 64 years. He is survived by three children, Larry (Diane), Linda (Tom), and Rita (Robert); 9 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
