1915 Graduate of Colgate University, B.A. Degree, Science and Mathematics. In September of 1915 he started teaching at Watervliet High School where he became head of the Science Department. He then served as Mathematics teacher and Assistant House Master of Kennedy House at Lawrenceville from 1917-1918.

In May 1918 he left Lawrenceville to enlist in the Chemical Warfare Service of the United States Army at Washington, D.C. during World War I. While there, he attended the American University. At the time of his honorable discharge he achieved the rank of Sergeant.

He married Regina Martin in 1919. Following his marriage he went to Elmira where he taught science at the Elmira Free Academy. In September of 1920, he became Principal at Roxbury High School, Roxbury, NY. The following year, in 1921, he became Principal at Port Byron High School.

In 1924 he graduated from Columbia University achieving a Master of Arts Degree and Superintendent of Schools Diploma, followed by a Doctor of Education Degree from Syracuse University.

In 1954, the Arthur A. Gates Elementary School was dedicated in his name.

He was Principal of Port Byron Schools from 1921 until 1960 when he retired and was an active member of the American Legion.

Mr. Gates has been honored by inclusion to the "Port Byron Area Hall of Fame".
