Clara Bernadine Darrow, 75, of Leavenworth, was called to her heavenly home by her Savior Monday, Aug. 20, 2012, at the University of Kansas Hospital, surrounded by her family. She was born May 18, 1937, in Leavenworth, the daughter of Francis J. and Mary E. (Kimmet) Gast.
She graduated from Jarbalo High School in 1955. Her first job was at the Leavenworth Glove Factory and was also a secretary for the Girl Scouts of America. She worked for Hallmark Cards for 18 years and ran a daycare from her home for many years, being "Aunt Clara" to all the children for which she cared. Clara was a cook for the Lansing School District and Montgomery Wards. After retirement she worked as a secretary for Thompson's Tax Service. She was an avid square dancer for over 30 years.
On Jan. 18, 1958, she married Richard J. Darrow Sr., in Tonganoxie. He preceded her in death on May 20, 2002. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Elizabeth Gast.
Clara is survived by her children, Betty (Frank Goss) Klinedinst of Leavenworth, Richard (Gloria) Darrow of Easton, Roger (Annie Williamson) Darrow of Leavenworth, Raymond (Bambi) Darrow of Leavenworth and Bonnie (Matthew) Yunghans of Leavenworth; her grandchildren, Billy (Mandy) Klinedinst, Heather (John) Green, Heather (Josh) Lieber, Jodie (David) Saultz, Tyler Darrow, Rachel Darrow, Amanda Darrow, Chelsey Darrow, Kylee Darrow, Katie (Paul) Kelly, Kelly (Brandon) Marshall and David Yunghans; her great-grandchildren, Luke and Hank Klinedinst, Hayden Lieber and Klayton and Lexie Saultz; her sisters, Cecilia Wilmes, Henrietta Bradley, Christine (Kenny) Thompson, Freda (John) Meier and Lucy White; her brothers, Francis Gast, Stephen (Jean) Gast, Bernard Gast, Herman Gast, Vincent (Kathy) Gast, Alfred Gast, Harry Gast and Louis (Fran) Gast; her brother-in-law, Jack Darrow; sister-in-law, Alice (Jack) Blaser; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Clara will always be remembered in our hearts as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt to many. Grandma Clara was the #1 fan of each of her grandchildren, attending every activity possible and she always had a ready supply of snicker doodles.
Visitation beginning with praying the rosary will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Francis de Sales Church with Rev. William McEvoy as celebrant. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Francis deSales building fund or the Lansing Community Club.
