HUBBARD – Thomas R. Gast, 90, passed away Thursday afternoon, Feb. 28, 2013, at the Hospice House.
Tom was born March 1, 1922, in Pennsylvania, a son of the late Frank and Maude (Moyer) Gast.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as an Aviation Metal Smith on the U.S.S. Boxer and the U.S.S. Franklin, where he bravely earned a Purple Heart.
He was of the Protestant faith and retired after 45 years as an engineer for the New York Central Railroad.
Tom also owned Tony's Sandwich Shop in Hubbard for 41 years.
Tom was a member of the Masonic Blue Lodge York Rite in Niles and the Al Koran Shrine in Cleveland. He also belonged to the Mineral Ridge Volunteer Fire Department for 10 years and the VFW Post 4192 in Mineral Ridge.
He enjoyed spending his summers at his home on Lake Tomahawk and his early morning coffee with friends at C's Waffles in Hubbard.
Tom will be sadly missed by his daughter, June (Glenn) Davies of Mineral Ridge and two grandchildren, Glenn "Bip" Davies and Eric Davies of Mineral Ridge.
Besides his parents, Tom was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Gast; and two brothers, John and James Gast.
Per Tom's request, cremation will take place.
