Andrew Powell Gass was the son of Rev. Andrew and Mary Polly Moyers Gass. He was born October 5, 1819 in Dandridge, Jefferson County, Tennessee. On November 8, 1842 in Jefferson County, Tennessee he married Sarah Ann McFadin. He and Sarah had 6 children, Mary Jane, William Thomas, Joseph Asbury, Samuel Fain, Sarah Ann and Nannie Powell Gass. Andrew died in Indian Territory, Oklahoma on June 27, 1861 and was brought to Fannin County, Texas to be buried.
Arthur Gass said that Andrew P. Gass was in Indian Territory and got sick with a fever. The Jefferson County book also said Andrew was killed in Indian Territory in the Civil War. Arthur said he was returned to Bonham by buckboard and died at home. His son joined the same unit and his mother sent him with his slave Jim to watch out for him.
Word of mouth of Arthur Gass and the Gass Family Bible, owned by Arthur E.Gass, Dallas, Texas and now with his son of same name in San Antonio, Texas. Notes of Bible shared by Jim Dangel of Sitka, AK in 2005.
Submitter note: due to the conflicting stories of his place of death I have purposely left the place of death blank on his memorial.. both stories are in his bio...one says he died in Oklahoma in Indiana Territory and the other says he got sick there and was brought back home to TX to die...
